I’m a third-year student at Japan Women’s University. Unfortunately, I have not been on campus often because many of my classes have been conducted online under the situation of coronavirus crisis, but I have found several nice places on campus on the days I went there. You can feel the history of JWU from these places and today, I would like to introduce them to you.

Can you guess where these three photos were taken at? They look like a castle and a beautiful garden, but all of them were taken on JWU campus. I took these photos during a break from a few face-to-face classes. The photo on the side of the title is the Naruse Memorial Hall. On a cloudy day, it creates an atmosphere of a castle. The photo on the left is a bench which is between the Nanajunenkan (“Seventieth Year Memorial Building”) and the Kosetsukan Building. It is an old-fashioned thing. The photo on the right is the corner of a roof garden named ‘Izumi Float Garden’ at the low-rise Hyakunenkan (“100th Year Memorial Building”). Many students may not be aware of this, but JWU is one of the oldest universities in Japan, and has reached the 120th year since it was founded. Therefore, there are several buildings which were named after its memorial years on campus.

The university decided to go back to face-to-face lessons in principle from this year, so the campus will be busy with students again. Going to classes and joining club activities are important, but I want you to find your favorite places on campus. It will be fun to look for not only the modern places such as Hyakunijunenkan (“120th Year Memorial Building”) and the library, but also the places you can be relaxed. I introduced you three of my favorite places on campus in this report. I hope you will visit them when you come back on campus and feel the history of our university.

皆さん、こんにちは。私は、日本女子大学の学生です。大学生活の２年間をコロナ禍で学びました。その中でも数少ない登校日に、日本女子大学の歴史を感じることができるような場所を見つけたので、今回ご紹介します。

突然ですが、このページに掲載されている３枚の写真がどこで撮られたか、当てられますか？城や庭園にも見えます。しかし、これらは私が日本女子大学構内で撮影したものです。数少ない対面授業の合間に撮影しました。
タイトル横の写真は、成瀬記念講堂です。曇りの昼間という状況が、城の雰囲気を醸し出しています。左にある写真は、七十年館と香雪館の間にあるベンチです。とても趣があります。右にある写真は、百年館低層棟の屋上庭園「泉フロートガーデン」の一角です。ここが創立120年を迎えた歴史ある大学だということに気づかないかもしれません。メモリアルイヤーに建物が建設される日本女子大学ならではの場所だと思います。

今年度から対面での授業が原則となりました。待ち望んでいた通学です。学業やサークル活動に専念することも大事ですが、是非お気に入りの場所を見つけていただきたいと思います。その際、百二十年館や図書館といった近代的な場所だけでなく、どこか落ち着くような場所を探してみることも楽しいかもしれません。
今回は、日本女子大学の歴史を感じることができる場所を３か所紹介しました。このレポートが、皆さんの学生生活を楽しむ方法の一助となれば幸いです。
