In my hometown of Nagasaki, a festival called "Nagasaki Kunchi" is held every year to showcase traditional performing arts.

This is a festival held for the purpose of showing the traditions that have been passed down from ancient times in the streets of the city and it starts from a shrine named Suwa Shrine. Among these traditional performances, there is one in particular that stands out. It's called "Kokko desho". As part of the performance, there is a float in the shape of a mikoshi (portable shrine) with several large cushions on it, and it weighs about 1 ton. Thirty-six men who are physically able carry the mikoshi with one hand each. In addition to that, eight children ride on it, so it then weighs about 1.5 tons.

In addition, there are four elementary school students on top of the mikoshi who beat taiko drums. The elementary school students also seem to be struggling and feel some fear.

The participants chant “Kokko desho”, and the rhythm remains almost the same from the beginning to the end of this performance. However, during the performance, there are some moments when the mikoshi is tossed into the sky, and this generates excitement and cheers from the onlookers. The most important moment is when the mikoshi is raised and caught.

In fact, when I was in elementary school, I did a Kokko desho performance on a sports day. There is an audition among students who want to carry it, and the volume of each student’s voice, the student’s height, and the student’s motivation are judged. Also, breathing together is very important to prevent serious injury. In the actual performance, I was able to climb to the highest part of the mikoshi and give a good performance.

Through this experience, I was able to realize how wonderful this Nagasaki tradition is, and that we must cherish it. Carrying on a tradition is never easy. However, I believe that it is our mission to absolutely pass on to future generations important traditions that can only be experienced in the region.

私の出身地である長崎では、伝統芸能を披露する「長崎くんち」というお祭りが毎年開催されています。

古くから伝わる伝統を見せることを目的に行われるお祭りで、諏訪神社という神社から始まります。そんな伝統芸能の中でも、ひときわ目立つものがあります。それは「コッコデショ」と呼ばれています。重さ約1トンの大きな座布団を乗せた神輿の形をした山車が上演されます。体力のある36人の男性が片手で神輿を担ぎます。それに加えて8人の子供が乗るので、重さは約1.5トンにもなります。

また、神輿の上には4人の小学生が太鼓を叩きます。小学生も苦戦したり恐怖と戦っている子もいます。

担ぎ手は「コッコデショ」と唱えますが、このリズムは最初から最後までほぼ同じです。しかし、神輿が天に放たれる瞬間があり、見物人からは歓声が上がります。最も重要な瞬間は、神輿を上げてキャッチする瞬間です。
実は私も小学生の頃、運動会でコッコでショをやったことがあります。担ぎたい生徒の中からオーディションがあり、生徒一人ひとりの声の大きさ、身長、やる気などを審査します。また、一緒に呼吸することは、重大な怪我を防ぐために非常に重要です。本番では神輿の一番高いところまで登って、いい演技ができました。

この経験を通して、この長崎の伝統の素晴らしさ、そして私たちが大切にしなければならないことを実感することができました。伝統を継承することは決して容易なことではありません。しかし、その地域でしか味わえない大切な伝統を確実に後世に引き継いでいくことが私たちの使命だと考えています。
