It is difficult to motivate yourself to start learning a foreign language. In my case, I started studying English because I had to take TOEIC for job hunting. However, I realized the attractiveness of the language itself and the process of learning it, so I came to be interested in them, which motivated me to study harder.

　When I study English, I focus more on listening and reading aloud than vocabulary and grammar. For example, it is necessary to understand the difference between L and R, the connection of words, and intonation to read English sentences more smoothly. From shadowing, I can clearly understand what I cannot pronounce. I enjoy shadowing because I can purely concentrate on speaking.
It is also a good idea to use such modern age tools as YouTube and Twitter. Any comments from foreign countries on videos and hot topics teach me how to use real English. I can even learn slang to express feelings. Singing English songs emotionally can also be a good practice on how to express feelings in English. Experiencing English like this is beyond normal language learning for me because it enables me to understand the feelings of other people around the world. In other words, I feel that connecting to the world assists my learning.
In the past when I was learning English, I felt like the more grammar I studied, the better I would become at English. But I realized that it is more important to learn from your mistakes. Now I know that trial and error is important in language learning.

　I am glad that I enjoy learning English now. I’m still a beginner and I need to make an effort to get a good score on TOEIC, but I want to continue studying without forgetting the joy of English. The joy of learning English led me to study another language, Korean. Because I like Korean dramas and K-pop very much, I will be happy if I become able to read just a few sentences and understand them. It took me a while to motivate myself to learn English, but once I started, language learning has been an interesting and rewarding experience for me.

　外国語勉強を始めることは腰が重い。私が英語を勉強し始めたきっかけは就活も見据えたTOEIC資格取得のためであったからであった。しかし、外国語とその学習過程の魅力を知って湧き始めた興味が、何よりも基礎となった。

　単語、文法、その他の事以上に、リスニングのための音読を重視して学習し始めた。LとRの違い、言葉のつながりや文全体の抑揚などを身につける上で必須であり、スムーズなリーディングにも繋がる。シャドーイングは何ができていないのかを明らかにし、また“話す”という言語本来の役割を行うことで、純粋に楽しむことができた。
YouTubeやTwitter、歌謡曲も勉強において便利なツールであることは現代ならではの事である。動画や話題トピックに対する海外からのコメントは、リアルな使い方やさらにはスラングも投稿者の感情をくみ取りながら理解しやすく、気持ちをのせながら歌うことは自分の言葉として伝える練習にもなる。海外とリアルタイムで共感できることは、語学学習の枠を超えて、人々と繋がることの嬉しさを教えてくれた。逆を言えば、繋がりながら学ぶことが理解を早めるとも言えるのではないだろうか。
　時間をかけるうちに英語の型の理解が深まった体感があるが、文構造を分解し組み立てるという中で間違え直しの繰り返しであった。自分自身で、学んだ内容を正しい解釈として理解するまでの試行錯誤は実験のようであり、面白いものである。

　言語自体を、言語を楽しむということの魅力を体感できたことは、ここまでの英語学習で得られた大きな糧である。とはいえ、まだ初歩段階で、TOEICに準じた学習であることからも、英語へのより深い理解にはさらに努力が必要であるが、その楽しさを忘れることなく学習していくつもりだ。最近は韓流ドラマやK-POPなどの好きが高じて、韓国語も学習し始めた。少しでも読むことや理解することができるだけでも嬉しい。だからこそ、外国語は私に興味を持たせるのだろう。
