Today, I would like to share my experience of watching a Kabuki play. I got a ticket for Kabuki performance for beginners arranged by the university's International Office, so I went to see it with my friends. The program I saw was “Yoshitsune Senbonzakura", which is a work that has been played since the Edo period (around the 19th century). It is one of the top three Kabuki plays; the other two are: "Sugawara Denju Tenshokan" and "Kanadehon Chushingura”. Kabuki is a traditional Japanese performing art that has continued for over 400 years and it is a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. It is said to be originated in 1603 by a woman called Izumo-no-Okuni, who was dressed in a unique costume and performed songs and dance in an open area. Today, all characters in Kabuki are played by male actors. The actors who play the roles of women are called "ONNAGATA", and the ones who play the roles of men are called "TACHIYAKU". It was my first time to see "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura", so I was excited. A fox appeared in this performance. The fox was played by a stagehand called Kuroko, and I was impressed by the emotions of the fox expressed in the mixture of fierce and smooth movements. In addition, the emotions of the characters were also expressed powerfully due to the changes in the voices of the actors. Kabuki seems to be too difficult to appreciate for many people at first glance, but there are many genres and easy-to-understand performances, so I recommend that you try watching it once.

今回、私は友達と歌舞伎を鑑賞したことについて、共有しようと思います。国際交流課が初心者でもわかりやすい歌舞伎鑑賞教室のチケットを用意してくださったので、参加させていただきました。今回私が鑑賞した演目は『義経千本桜』という江戸時代から続く名作品です。三代歌舞伎の一つであり、１９世紀頃生まれた作品です。「菅原伝授手習鑑」「義経千本桜」「仮名手本忠臣蔵」が三大歌舞伎です。
まず、歌舞伎について説明します。歌舞伎は４００年以上続く日本の伝統芸能であり、ユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録されています。始まりは、戦国時代の終盤である１６０３年と言われています。
元祖は、出雲の阿国（いずものおくに）と言われる女性が、今日で奇抜な格好をし、開放的な歌や踊りを披露したところから始まったと言われています。これを「かぶき踊り」と言いました。歌舞伎は、すべての役を男性が演じる演劇として育まれました。女性の役をつとめる俳優を「女方（おんながた）」、男性の役をつとめる俳優を「立役（たちやく）」と呼びます。
私は、歌舞伎自体は初めてではないのですが、『義経千本桜』を観るのは初めてだったので、とても楽しみでした。歌舞伎教室では、最初に歌舞伎と上演される作品について説明がありました。ですから、初めての人や留学生の方も、歌舞伎の知識を得た上で楽しめるように感じました。途中から今回の演目の中には、狐が登場します。狐は、黒子と呼ばれる人間が演じるのですが、動きに狐の感情が現れていたことに対し、感動を覚えました。激しい動きや、滑らかな動きが混在しており、見入ってしまいました。また、登場人物の喜怒哀楽は、役者の演技に加え、声色の変化も相まって迫力がありました。歌舞伎は、一見敷居が高い印象を受けますが、ジャンルも多岐にわたる上にわかりやすい内容の演目もたくさんあるので、ぜひ鑑賞してみてください。
