Since I entered university, I realized that students have much more freedom than I thought, and there are doors to various opportunities. However, these doors do not open by themselves; you have to open them and step into the rooms. If there is something I am interested in, it is important that I take action to get involved.

One incident that made me realize the importance of taking action is that I participated in an extension course which was offered by the university. At my university, institutions such as the Lifelong Learning Center, the International Office, and the Social Cooperation Education Center provide various courses which students can take regardless of their majors. If you are interested in any of these courses, you can participate in the free guidance sessions in advance and receive useful advice. The courses which they offer are various. For example, there are courses to learn how to become civil servants and practice English conversation. The main purpose of these courses is to help students build skills for better career, but they also organize interesting events such as introducing the activities of disaster volunteers. Every time I attend such courses and events, I learn many new things. For instance, I learned about occupations which I had never heard of or new kinds of volunteer work. I am happy that my knowledge is expanding through participating in these courses and events.

I always try to believe in my possibilities and continue to take on challenges, so I’m just grateful that the university provides opportunities in this way. I met great professors and senior students and made many new friends from the courses and events I attended. Talking with them gives me a good chance to think about my future career.

大学というのは、私が想像していた以上に自由で、何事にも門戸が広く開かれた場でした。門戸は広いけれど、自分でその門を叩かなければ、決してその中に入ることはできない、仮にも向こうから呼んでくれることは有りません。やりたいことがあるなら、自分の力でそこに何が必要なのか考えて、自分のもとへ手繰り寄せていくことがどんなに大事であるか、日々痛感しています。

私が、自ら門を叩いてみることの大切さを実感した一つには、日本女子大学で用意して下さった公開講座ガイダンスへ参加したことがあります。本学では、生涯学習センターや国際交流課、社会連携教育センターを始めとした機関が、本当に様々な機会を用意して下さっています。受講を少しでも考えていれば、事前に無料ガイダンスに参加することができ、丁寧にご指導頂けます。具体的には、公務員講座や、英会話講座、旅行業務取扱管理者対策講座など、キャリア支援の一環として資格取得の達成をサポートして下さるものや、災害ボランティアについて考えるイベントがありました。ガイダンスやイベントに積極的に参加したことで、今までいかに、自分軸の中の狭い範囲で物事を見たり考えたりしていたのか、ということを実感しました。資格取得に向けた講座では、耳にしたこともないような資格や職種に出会えたり、災害ボランティアのイベントでは、新しく開設された社会連携科目を知ったりと、参加するごとに自分自身の無知に気付かされ、知識の幅が広がっていく感覚が嬉しくもありました。

常にどんなことにも可能性を信じて挑戦し続けよう、と日頃から心がけているだけに、こうして様々なチャレンジの機会を提供して下さることに、只々感謝の気持ちでいます。教授や上級生、新しい友達との出会いもあり、お話を伺い、自分自身とも向き合う中で、将来の方向性を整えていく時間にもなりました。
