In winter 2020, I joined a program that involved learning English in New York City. I wanted to explore the locations around the city where movies were filmed. This was the simple reason why I went to NYC, but I also met two nice people when I was there.

The first person is my host mother, whom I lived with for one month. She was studying at university to increase her work opportunities while continuing to work as a psychology counselor. One night, when I was writing a report, she taught me how important continuing to learn is. Also, she told me that the more you study, the smarter you get, the more money you can make. These words encouraged me. She actually studied psychology both day and night and worked hard. From her, I learned that there is no age limit to doing something new.

The second nice person is an American I met in Pace University and who became my friend. She studies Japanese language in order to understand the Asian market. She has only been learning Japanese since she entered university but can speak Japanese well. I have also been learning English since I entered university so I was motivated by her level of Japanese to improve my English skill.

They are two people who I admire. Thanks to them, I have been able to continue studying English and economics after I returned to Japan. The New York program was only for one month but I learned a lot. I cherish the memories that I made in NYC.

2020年冬。当時1年生だった私はニューヨーク研修に参加した。参加理由は大好きな映画「プラダを着た悪魔」のロケ地巡りがしたいからだった。そんな単純な理由で参加した研修だったが、２人の素敵な方に出会うことができた。

１人目は１か月共に生活したホストマザーである。彼女は心理カウンセラーとして仕事をしながら大学に通い、キャリアの幅を広げていた。
ある晩、私が大学のレポートを作成している時、彼女からいただいた言葉がある。
それは“more study more smart more money” 知識を得て、賢くなり、お金を稼ごう、である。
この言葉を体現したかのように、朝も夜も自己研鑽し、仕事に邁進している彼女と過ごして、学ぶことに年齢制限はないこと、自分の努力次第で可能性はいくらでも広がることを学んだ。

2人目はペース大学で出会ったアメリカ人の友達だ。彼女は経済学を専攻しており、アジア市場の動向を理解するために日本語を学んでいた。日本語学習を始めたのは大学生になってからだというが、とても上手に日本語を話していた。私も英語学習を本格的に始めたのは大学1年生の時だったため、非常に勇気づけられた。

２人に共通しているのは年齢に関係なく何事も挑戦し、学び続けていることだ。彼女たちの姿やいただいた言葉は私の原動力となり、帰国後もTOEIC学習や経済学の勉強を継続している。1か月という短い研修だったが、そこでの出会いや学びは生涯大切にしたい宝物になった。彼女たちに少しでも近づけるよう、卒業後も学びをやめない社会人になりたい。
