Visiting the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection
Do you know Keith Haring who was an artist in New York?
When I was a freshman, I learned about the contemporary artist Keith Haring during a lecture on New York culture. Haring, known for his chalk drawings in the New York subway, used his art to express social messages, particularly around AIDS and LGBTQ+ rights, topics he personally related to as a gay man. Captivated by his distinct style, I visited the Nakamura Keith Haring Museum in Yamanashi. The museum's design complements Haring's work, with themes like "From Darkness to Hope" reflecting the turbulent 1980s in New York.
During my visit, there was an exhibit titled "Who Wants It?" based on Haring’s visit to Hiroshima, where he connected his experiences with themes of love, equality, and anti-war activism. This exhibit also included works from a charity concert held in his memory.
Visiting the museum allowed me to explore not only Haring’s American works but also his connections to Japan. Though I have not yet been to Hiroshima, learning about its association with Haring reminded me of the ongoing importance of reflecting on war and peace.

多くのアーティストは独特のアートスタイルを判別できますが、多くの場合もう少し深く見て、その作品の背後にあるメッージを見る必要があります。私は1年生の時、ニューヨークの文化に関する講演で現代アーティストのキース?へリングについて学びました。ニューヨークの地下鉄でチョークの絵を描いたことで知られるヘリングは、特に彼自身が関係するエイズやLGBTQ+の権利に関する社会的なメッセージを表現しました。彼の独特なスタイルに魅了され、私は夏休みに山梨県にある中村キース?ヘリング美術館を訪れました。博物館のデザインは、ニューヨークの激動の1980年代を反映した「闇から希望へ」などのテーマで、ヘリングの作品を展示していました。ちょうどこの期間はヘリングの広島訪問を題材にした「誰が欲しい？」という彼の体験を愛、平等、反戦活動のテーマと結びついた展覧会がありました。この展覧会には、彼の記憶の中で開催されたチャリティーコンサートの作品も含まれており、博物館を訪れたことでヘリングのアメリカ社会に関する作品だけでなく、彼の日本とのつながりも見ることができました。私はまだ広島に行ったことがありませんが、ヘリングとの関連性を知ることで、戦争と平和について考えることの大切さを改めて考えようとするきっかけになりました。
