Participating in the International Student Conference
This summer I participated in the International Student Conference (ISC). At this conference, students from all over the world gathered to discuss the challenges the world is currently facing and to propose policy recommendations at the final forum.
The reason I decided to join this organization was my experience in Japan Women’s University’s training program in New York. In that program, I discovered the joy of discussing my opinions with people from different backgrounds, and I wanted to have more of the same experiences. While researching on the Internet, I came across the ISC, where students from different backgrounds meet, and I decided to participate.
Participating in the conference was more challenging than expected. The overall theme of the conference was “Better Business, Better World”. My group oversaw sustainability. During the first half of the conference, we struggled to consolidate the content of policy proposals that balanced sustainability and business, and I had discussions with our team members late into the night. Once we decided on our policy proposal, our team worked together to prepare for the final presentation. We successfully completed our final presentation, and the growth we had shown since the mid-term presentation was highly praised. Although we did not win, the positive feedback from the judges and the audience made it a very satisfying presentation.
Through this experience, I was able to reevaluate my strengths and weaknesses. Recognizing my strengths gave me confidence, while identifying my weaknesses made me feel like I could grow even more. Specifically, I realized that my English skills were not sufficient for academic discussions, so I plan to continue studying and improving my English. Additionally, the conference’s theme of social issues sparked a strong interest in addressing these issues. I want to continue exploring how I can address these societal challenges in my future career.
学生会議に参加して
私はこの夏、国際学生会議(ISC)に参加しました。この会議では世界中から学生が集まり、現在世界が直面している課題について議論し、最終発表会で政策提言を行います。私がこの団体に参加しようと思ったきっかけは春休みに参加した本学のニューヨーク研修です。私はこの研修で自分の意見を異なるバックグラウンドを持つ人と議論する楽しさを知り、もっとやってみたいと思いました。そんな最中、インターネットで調べる中で国際色豊かな学生が集まる国際学生会議という場が目に留まり、参加を決意しました。
実際に参加してみて、活動は想像以上に大変なものでした。今回の会議全体のテーマは「より良いビジネスを通してより良い世界へ」でした。その中でも、私の班はサステナビリティーを担当していました。会議前半ではサステナビリティーとビジネスが両立した政策提言の内容がなかなかまとまらず、真夜中までチームメンバーと話し合いました。政策提言のテーマが決まってからはチーム一丸となって、最終発表会の準備を行いました。そして、行われた最終発表会では無事発表を終えることができ、中間発表からの成長もとても評価して頂きました。残念ながら優勝はできませんでしたが、審査員の方々や聴衆の方々の反応がとても良かったのでとても満足いく発表になりました。
これらの活動を通して、自分の強み弱みは何かというのを再認識することができました。自分の強みを認識することは自信につながりましたし、弱みを認識することは更なる成長に繋がると感じています。具体的には、自身の英語力はアカデミックな議論をするのには足りていないと感じることが多々あったので、これからももっと勉強し、英語力を上げていきたいと思いました。また、今回の会議のテーマのように社会問題に対する取り組みにとても関心が湧き、今後も自分にできることを探していきたいなと思いました。
