Volunteer Study Support Project
In May 2024, I took part in a volunteer activity for supporting elementary school students to learn. The main task was teaching math to elementary students, but the supporting staff also watched the children while they were studying. I took part in this activity because I am majoring in child studies, and I will have the opportunity to interact with children.
I have learned from this experience which is that children can solve questions by themselves without support. They got a failing grade on an exam; however, they could understand their mistakes.
I found that the children need people to keep an eye on them rather than people to teach math. The children noticed careless mistakes, such as forgetting to read the question sentence by themselves. They could solve the question one more time. When they asked me for help, I taught them about the math question, and at once, they understood it. In conclusion, they are not poor at math.
I have changed my perception for children through this experience. Children have potential certainly more than society thinks. Adults give children too much advice about living their lives, but we should watch them grow up patiently.
In this elementary school project, the children have the freedom to do what they want. I am glad to chat with them because I feel that they are relieved. I want to increase such learning spaces where children have freedom, and the learning space is free of charge.
学習支援ボランティアの活動を通して
５月に初めて学習支援ボランティアとして活動した。主に小学生に算数を教えるのが仕事だが、基本的に子どものペースで学習するのを見守る形だ。児童学を勉強する者として、子どもと関わる機会を持ちたいと思い、軽い気持ちで参加した。
この活動を通して、ある気づきがあった。私が助けなくても、子どもたちは問題を解くことができるということだ。ここに集められているのは、テストで算数の結果が良くなかった子どもたちであるが、自分で間違えた問題を解き直しすることができている。
そう、彼らに必要なのは算数を教えることではなく、算数の学習を見守ることであった。一緒にテストの解き直しをしていると、うっかりミスや問題文の読み忘れに自分で気づき、もう一度解いてみると大抵できる。それでも出来ない時は教えることもあるが、理解は早い。彼らは算数が苦手な子どもたちではないのだ。
算数が苦手な子どもたちに算数を教えてあげるつもりで参加したが、実際に参加して意識が変わった。子どもは社会が想像するよりも確かな力を持っている。大人はよく子どもに口を出してしまうが、もっと辛抱強く見守るべきではないか。
ここは算数を勉強する場だが、基本的に子どもの意思に任せているから、子どもが雑談していても良い場所だ。子どもが今日学校であった話をしてくれたら、初対面でも少し距離が縮まったように感じて嬉しく思う。このような自由で無償の学び場が広がってほしい。
