My University Life
Hello! I’m a 1st year student of Japan Women’s University. I am going to describe my fulfilling college life. I am in the Department of International Culture which values “cross cultural learning”. This past summer, I went to Boston in the United States, which is said to be the oldest city in America for overseas study. It was my first time abroad. The overseas study, which started with my heart beating and excitement, was an amazing experience. It was the first time I stepped into a foreign land and all the things I saw, I heard, I felt were all fresh for me. Then I noticed the obvious difference in cultural values. In particular, being “free” and expressing “Individuality”. These are difference between America and Japan I felt. Individuals wear clothes that they want to, they do something what they want, they work as they like. Yet, in Japan I can’t help but to care about people’s eyes judging me, but when I was in America I could spend freely without worrying about anyone’s judging eyes. On the other hand, I could realize the charm of Japan – the beautiful towns, good public safety, politeness at work and cleanliness. From this experience, I felt it firsthand that there are a lot of things I can’t see unless I take an objective perspective.
Now, I’ll tell you about my student life in Tokyo. I belong to a futsal club and go to all of the practices. This is what I live for and what makes university life so satisfying.
In addition, there is another activity which enriches my life - a part time job as a cram school teacher. This was big challenge for me. To improve students’ grades, of course this is main job for cram school teacher but other things like to communicate with their guardians, to use PCs, to be careful with my words, to interact with seniors. All of these were first experiences for me and were difficult for me. Sometimes I feel high stress, but I think what I experience at work is what I’ll experience in the future after I become an adult member of society.
Everyday, the cycle of university, my club, and my part time job is sometimes hard but it is very fulfilling. In my university life, I want to challenge all of things I desire. I will continue to make it more fulfilling from now on.
私の大学生活
こんにちは。私は日本女子大学に通う大学1年生です。私の充実した大学生ライフについてお話ししようと思います。私は“越境”に重きが置かれている国際文化学部で１期生として学んでいます。今年の夏には海外短期研修があり、私はアメリカ最古の都市“ボストン”に行ってきました!!人生初の海外。ドキドキとワクワクから始まった海外研修は本当に素晴らしいものでした。初めて自分の身体で異文化に触れ、目に見えるもの耳に聞こえるもの肌で感じるもの、全てが新鮮で、今までの当たり前、価値観が崩されました。“自由”“個性”。私が感じた日本との違いです。それぞれが好きな服を着て好きなことをして、好きなように働いて…日本ではどうしても周りの目を気にしてしまう私も誰の目も気にすることなく、自由にのびのびと過ごすことができました。逆に、日本の魅力に気づくこともありました。町の綺麗さ、治安の良さ、仕事の丁寧さ…客観的な立場からしか見えないもの気づかないことがあることを身をもって実感しました。
さて、ここからは東京での学生ライフについてお話ししましょう。私は、フットサルサークルに所属していて、全ての練習に参加しています。私の生きがいであり大学生活の華となっています。
私の生活を占めている2つ目のものとして、塾講師のアルバイトが挙げられます。このアルバイトは私にとって大きな挑戦でした。生徒の成績を上げること、もちろんこれが一番の仕事ですが、保護者様との関わり方、パソコンの使い方、言葉遣い、先輩との関わり方、全てが初めての経験でした。精神的に追い込まれることも多いですが、今後社会に出てから経験するであろうことを先取りしているようにも思えます。
毎日学校、サークル、アルバイトの繰り返しでハードですが、とても充実しています。やりたいこと全てに挑戦する学生ライフ。今後はより充実させていきます。
